3 die, 4 injured in explosion in Tema

Three persons died and four others suffered various injuries during an explosion at the Joyea Company Limited along the Tema motor­way at Spintex, Accra, last Friday.

The deceased were workers of the company, which is into the manufacture of roofing sheets and aluminum products.

Both the dead and the injured were conveyed to the Tema General Hospital and the dead deposited at the mortuary.

Mutilated bodies with intes­tines gushing out and in a pool of blood were spotted at the scene.

Two of the deceased were reported to have died on the spot and the other confirmed dead while receiving treatment at the hospital.

The incident was said to have brought a large crowd to the scene to help in the rescue of other workers.

The workers were in shock and some of them wept uncon­trollably.

Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service(GNFS) and the Ghana Police Service were at the scene to ensure law and order and to commence investigations.

The Head of Public Relations of the GNFS, Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Grade One, Timothy Osafo-Affum, con­firmed the tragedy to the Ghana­ian Times, yesterday, in Accra.

He said the Service received a distress call at around 2:26p.m. and firefighters were dispatched to the scene.

According to him, the gas content of a cylinder being used for production activities explod­ed.

ACFO I Osafo-Affum said the injured workers were rushed to the Tema General Hospital while in critical condition.

He said investigations into the cause of the explosion were ongoing.

ACFO I Osafo-Affum stated that the scene had since been cordoned off to aid in investiga­tions.
