The 40 drivers, who were arrested on the Tema Motorway for various traffic offences last month, have been convicted to a total fine of GH₵23, 040.

The fines, which were imposed by the Accra Motor Traffic courts, were between GH₵600 and GH₵720.

Chief Superintendent of Police (Chief Supt) Agnes Caesar, the Deputy Commanding Officer of the Central Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service, disclosed these to the Ghanaian Times, in Accra, yesterday.

She said 79 motor riders, who were also arrested last month, have also paid court fines of GH¢ 17,460.00.

Chief Supt Caesar said the exercise would be sustained, to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians, adding that, “Drivers who do not abide by the road safety regulations, will be arrested and prosecuted to serve as deterrent to us.”

It would be recalled that the Ghanaian Times, in its Tuesday, June 18, 2019 issue, reported that 40 drivers were arrested by the police for various traffic offences on the motorway, in a special operation.

The drivers were driving on the shoulders of the road, while others made wrongful U-turns on the stretch of the road.

Chief Supt Caesar, who led the operation, which was under the auspices of the National Motor Traffic and Transport Department, was to ensure sanity on the roads.
