The Paramount Chief of Akyem Bosome Traditional Area and President of the Akyem Bosome Traditional Council in the Eastern Region, Okotwareasou Kantamanto Owurae Agyekum III, has appealed to the people to work together in unity to foster development in the area.

He emphasised the importance of using internal mechanisms to resolve conflicts when they arise, rather than resorting to violence, which undermines peace, unity, and development. He made these remarks at Akim Swedru on Friday during a meeting of the Traditional Council, which comprises Akyem Chiefs and elders from Swedro, Adiemra, Adaito, Aprade, Anamaase, Brenaase, Ofoase Kuma, and Amantia.

The traditional area has faced disputes that escalated into violence in 2015, stalling development as the council could not meet for eight years to take critical decisions affecting the area, as required under the Chieftaincy Act. It was not until 2023 that the Traditional Council convened for the first time in eight years to address development issues.

The Friday meeting, the third since 2023, resulted in a resolution to pursue legal actions to resolve the longstanding disputes hindering development. Addressing why the council would not continue dialogue with the queenmother, a party in the dispute, Okotwareasou Agyekum III explained that dialogue had been attempted but the queenmother remained adamant.

“The resolution seeks to unite the members of the Traditional Council into taking appropriate action, including legal measures, to curb the excesses of the queenmother. She is attempting to set a trend by claiming powers she does not customarily nor statutorily possess. It is incumbent upon the council members to curb that errant behaviour,” he said.

To ensure effective functioning of the council, the Paramount Chief nominated Nana Obrempong Ayim Mmorasam III, Akyeamehene and Amenasehene, as the acting Krontihene of the traditional area.

Nana Debrah Okrah, a local government expert, Amantia Abusuapanin, and Regent of the Mponua Division of Akyem Bosome Traditional Council, highlighted the need for capacity building among council members to strengthen governance and development efforts.
