Alvarez eclipses Messi, Aguero to set new Champions League record

ATLETICO Madrid striker, Julian Alvarez, has become the fastest Argentine player to reach 20 goals in the Champions League, hitting the landmark in a mere 35 appearances.

This prolific rate saw him reach the milestone two matches quicker than Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero and five ahead of Lionel Messi, who required 40 games to hit the twenty-goal mark, according to official UEFA statistics.

‘La Arana’ (The Spider) secured his 20th goal during Wednesday’s clash with Club Brugge in the first leg of the last-16 qualifying round. He showed clinical composure to convert a penalty just eight minutes into the tie at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Julian Alvarez has now registered 12 goals in 18 Champions League appearances for Atletico de Madrid, complementing the eight goals he netted in 17 matches for Manchester City prior to his high-profile switch to the Spanish capital.

His clinical strike against Club Brugge also propelled Julian Alvarez to second in the list of Atletico Madrid’s all-time leading goalscorers in Champions League history. With 12 goals, he moved past Saul’s tally of 11, though he remains some distance behind Antoine Griezmann’s formidable club record of 39. -besoccer
