The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the Accra Metropolitan Authority (AMA), Mr Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced plans by the assembly to recruit about 30 members of the national armwrestling team, the Golden Arms, for shining at the just ended African Championships.
According to him, the athletes have brought honour to the nation by winning 168 medals at the championship and deserved recognition and support.
“If you send your children to the battlefield to defend the flag and they return victorious, the right thing to do is to celebrate them,” he stated.
The Mayor made the announcement when he hosted the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) and members of the Golden Arms at his residence in Accra on Wednesday to celebrate their outstanding feat.
Ghana emerged overall winners of the Championship, amassing a total of 168 medals, consisting of 52 gold, 63 silver, and 34 bronze medals.
The Mayor said the AMA was committed to supporting sports development and empowering young people through employment opportunities.
“The selected athletes will be employed by the assembly and assigned responsibilities while also earning income. I will leave your leaders to do the selection, and from Monday, they can start work,” he added.
Mr Allotey stressed that this initiative forms part of the assembly’s broader vision of promoting sports and creating opportunities for the youth.
He further disclosed plans to establish an AMA sports team that would compete in various leagues, including football competitions in both men and women’s divisions.
“We want to promote sports, we will have an AMA team that will compete in various leagues. AMA has a vision, but this vision cannot be achieved alone; we need everybody on board to achieve it,” he revealed.
The Mayor also urged the athletes and the youth to adopt a leadership mindset and contribute positively to society.
On his part, the Municipal Chief Executive for the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, Mr Alfred Allotey-Gaisie, reaffirmed the assembly’s commitment to supporting sports development, stating that his assembly intends to engage unemployed young athletes in productive activities.
The President of GAF, Mr Charles Osei Asibey, thanked the MCEs for the employment opportunities for members of the national team.
