Bawku Revitalisation Fund: Restoring hope and stability

Scores of mourners, including sympathisers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), gathered at the National Mosque at Kanda to participate in the Janiza rites for Naser Toure Mahama, the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East, who passed away on Sunday after a short illness.

The Janiza rites, an Islamic funeral ceremony that includes prayers, washing, shrouding, and burial rituals, were led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, and monitored by The Ghanaian Times. The deceased was later laid to rest at the Madina Cemetery in accordance with Islamic tradition.

The solemn ceremony was attended by the family of the late MP, politicians, constituents, and religious leaders, who paid tributes to the deceased. Many mourners expressed shock over his passing, describing him as a man deeply committed to the welfare of his constituents.

The NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Organiser, Mr Anthony Nukepnu, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that, “He came to politics with a genuine heart, a very committed way of doing things, and helping the society. For the years he has been in Parliament, he really lived up to the expectations of the people and the Party.”

Mr Nukepnu also highlighted the late MP’s role as a caucus chairman for the Eastern Region, emphasising his dedication to fostering unity and effective communication.

For his part, the MP for Ashiaman, Mr Ernest Henry Norgbey, described the deceased as a calm and wise figure, noting, “Honourable Naser was such a fine gentleman. Very calm, and every time he spoke, he would use his wisdom.”

The leadership of Parliament and the entire Parliamentary Service issued a statement expressing condolences to the bereaved family and his constituents, describing him as a hardworking public servant who served the country with diligence, integrity, and responsibility.

A bye-election is expected to be held by the Electoral Commission (EC) to elect a new MP for the Ayawaso East constituency following the passing of Naser Toure Mahama.
