Boxing fans in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis have reason to cheer this Christmas Day (Dec. 25), as the Western Region Boxing Federation stages a special juvenile championship to honour the memory of the late boxing icon and Olympian, Eddie Blay Snr.
Dubbed the “Eddie Blay Memorial Contest,” the event forms part of the federation’s Christmas celebration activities. It is slated for the Funcity Ground and is expected to attract boxing enthusiasts from across the region.
The contest will feature juvenile teams from the Western and Central regions competing for a giant trophy donated by Madam Avis Vera Yankey, Chief Executive Officer of Savita House. Additional support is provided by Wilsad Support Limited and the Skyy Media Group.
According to Mr. Twintoh Walker, Central Regional Chairman of the Ghana Boxing Federation, the event is part of a series of festive activities, including the Westside Carnival and Masquerade. Other planned activities include an SHS Visual Arts contest, local and traditional food competition, Palm Wine music night, football gala, and Night of Legend Awards, among others.
The championship aims to honour the late Eddie Blay, who hailed from the region and represented Ghana at the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal. He was also a two-time Commonwealth Games medallist and achieved other notable accolades in his illustrious boxing career.
Key personalities expected to attend the event include the Western Regional Minister, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) Chief Executive, Regional Director of the National Sports Authority, and traditional chiefs.
Madam Yankey expressed her joy in supporting the event, stating that she hopes it will identify and nurture young boxing talents from the contest.
