The Chairman of the newly constituted Central Regional Armwrestling Association, Mr Abass Sulley, says the region is on the cusp of becoming the country’s armwrestling hub.

This, he explained, is due to the region’s abundant talent and its strong potential to develop armwrestlers who can compete both locally and internationally. He highlighted the region’s strategic location, rich sporting talent pool, and the association’s commitment to promoting the sport.

Mr Sulley made these remarks when the reconstituted leadership of the regional association paid a courtesy call on the Central Regional Sports Director, Ms Joyce Batsa, to familiarise themselves and discuss development collaboration with the National Sports Authority (NSA).

He indicated that the focus of the association’s development strategy would be on Junior and Senior High Schools, where armwrestling would be introduced as a competitive sport.

This initiative, he explained, is expected to identify and nurture young talents, providing opportunities for students to develop their skills and compete at the highest level.

The President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), Mr Charles Osei Asibey, echoed Mr Sulley’s sentiments, saying:

“Central Region is noted for sports and academics. The abundance of schools and the competitive spirit of student-athletes will make the region an attraction and soon create wealth out of the passions and emotions of our sport.”

Responding, Ms Joyce Batsa praised the Ghana Armwrestling Federation’s efforts to promote the sport nationwide and pledged her support for its development in the Central Region.

The mandate of the new leadership is to develop and promote armwrestling in Senior and Junior High Schools, form clubs, and raise a formidable regional team to feed into the national setup.

This initiative, according to officials, will not only promote the sport but also provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and potentially represent Ghana on the international stage.

The new regional leadership will be inaugurated in the coming days as the region prepares to host a training-of-trainers programme.
