Familial sexual abuse, a long-hidden crisis in Ghana, is finally being confronted through a new initiative aimed at breaking the culture of silence and holding perpetrators accountable.
Innova DDB Ghana, in partnership with Family Renaissance International (FRI) and 3Music TV, launched the “Call Them Out” campaign on Thursday in Accra, marking the International Day of the Child.
The campaign urges communities to support survivors and speak out against abuse, challenging a social norm that has persisted quietly for generations.
Chief Executive Officer of Ninani Group, Mr Joel Nettey, described the issue as long-standing but largely unspoken. “It’s been with us for a long time; the only problem is we don’t speak about it in Ghana,” he mentioned, stressing the need to call out abusers.
Founding President of FRI, Mrs Catherine Onwioduokit, described the campaign as essential for fostering accountability. “Silence and discouraging victims from speaking are ruining families,” she said, urging victims not to feel intimidated to report abuse. She highlighted social media’s role in shifting conversations from silence to protection.
Ms Audrey Quaye, Creative Director at Innova DDB, stated that the campaign goes beyond awareness, offering phone-based support, downloadable educational materials, and access to experts and counsellors via the campaign landing page. The initiative will also be amplified on digital platforms using the hashtag #CallThemOut.
During a panel discussion, Dr Delasy Kwami Gbekor, Ethel Obeng-Treve, and Ophelia Awinboma Azure emphasised the trauma victims endure, manipulative tactics used by abusers, and stigma that prevents reporting. They urged students to advocate for protection, accountability, and early reporting.
Organisers stressed that “Call Them Out” seeks to restore dignity, protect children, and reshape societal attitudes toward abuse, signalling a decisive move from silence to responsibility.
