Italian Fabio Cannavaro will coach Uzbekistan as they prepare for their first-ever World Cup next year, the Central Asian nation’s football association announced on Monday.
Cannavaro, who captained Italy to World Cup glory in 2006, brings a wealth of playing experience to the role, though his coaching record has been more mixed. His most recent managerial stint was with Dinamo Zagreb, a short-lived spell of less than four months that ended in April.
“The Uzbekistan Football Association has signed a contract with Fabio Cannavaro — a renowned specialist and one of the best defenders of his generation,” the statement said.
The 52-year-old has previously held coaching positions with clubs in China, Saudi Arabia, and Italy, and also served briefly as caretaker manager of the Chinese national team in 2019. He will succeed Timur Kapadze, who guided Uzbekistan to qualification for the World Cup for the first time in the country’s history in June.
