The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has strongly defended the Church’s role in speaking on matters of national concern, insisting that moral guidance on issues such as illegal mining is a core responsibility, not political interference.
In a pastoral statement issued yesterday in Accra, the Conference said the Church “cannot remain silent” when confronted with social and moral challenges that threaten human dignity, the environment, and the common good.
The statement follows recent public debate triggered by remarks attributed to Mary Awusi, who reportedly cautioned that Apostle Eric Nyamekye, Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, should be prepared to be treated as a politician if he continues to speak on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Describing the comment as unfortunate, the Bishops noted that equating moral advocacy with partisan politics risks undermining constructive public discourse.
“The Church does not seek power but strives to illuminate public life with truth,” the statement said, stressing that speaking on justice, peace, and environmental stewardship is a moral obligation rooted in Christian teaching.
While acknowledging reports that Dr Awusi has since apologised, the conference urged public officials to promote respectful engagement and remain open to ethical perspectives from religious bodies and civil society.
The Bishops also commended members of the Christian community for their measured and respectful reactions to the controversy, describing such responses as a reflection of “solidarity and restraint.”
Calling for unity, the conference appealed to Ghanaians to avoid divisive rhetoric and instead embrace dialogue and mutual respect in addressing national challenges.
“To public officials, we appeal for openness to the moral voice of the Church and all people of goodwill,” the statement added, while encouraging clergy and lay leaders to continue speaking the truth with prudence and love.
The statement was signed by Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference.
