The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has accused former President John Mahama of massaging the truth and hiding behind politics to cause more harm in the country.
He explained that the comments of the former president were unfair and in recent times are politically mischievous and demonstrative of double standards.
Former President Mahama recently expressed concerns over what he described as the Akufo-Addo-led administration’s penchant for blaming the previous government for its woes, and that the recent shutdown of radio stations by the National Communications Authority (NCA) is politically motivated.
He urged the president to intervene since freedom of the media is under threat under the government because it has failed to protect rights and lives of journalists and the decision to constantly blame previous governments for its challenges was tantamount to “abdicating the responsibility of running the country”.
According to Mr Oppong Nkrumah, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ofoase-Ayirebi, “any observer of our political landscape will not need to spend time in concluding the former President’s comments and actions in recent times are politically mischievous and demonstrative of double standards because the two stations are not the only stations affected by the ruling occasioned by their petition at Electronic Communication’s Tribunal.
“Does the former president suggests the NCA stands in contempt of the ruling of the tribunal? The former president allowed some of the stations to disobey the laws of the land, you have an administration that says the law must be applied as difficult as it is, if he states Akufo-Addo-led administration is superintending a push-back on media freedom, it is not backed by substance.
“It is imperative for the government to responsibly remind the citizenry and National Democratic Congress (NDC) of its achievements, hence, claims by its flagbearer the government has not really done enough since assuming office cannot hold.
“Three years on, we remain accountable to the citizenry to commit and explain to them what we have achieved so far and what remains outstanding in all humility, but when you have the former President or executives of former administration now seek the moral high ground and preach to the country about how better to manage the economy, we have a responsibility to quickly point to them records while we look at ways to complete what remains undone of our agenda,” Mr Oppong Nkrumah bemoaned.
