The Minister of the Interior, Mr Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has called on the various security agencies at the country’s borders to collaborate and coordinate activities effectively to ensure safety at the borders.
Mr Mubarak explained that effective security called for the collective responsibility of the security agencies, since no unit such as the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) alone could handle security matters, stressed the need for them to work as a team and asked stakeholders to support.
The Minister made the call when he addressed the security personnel at the Aflao border in the Ketu-South Municipality of the Volta Region to end his two-day familiarisation visit to the Volta Region, where he identified challenges confronting the security agencies in the discharge of their duties.
Mr Mubarak said the government was committed to addressing the problems militating against the work of security personnel particularly at the borders, saying much as the government was working hard to improve the performance of security personnel in the country, to deliver on their mandate they should also work hard and show greater commitment to work.
He noted that the two-day visit had aided him to clearly appreciate the various problems facing the security agencies better and assured them that the government would swiftly tackle and resolve the problems to ensure that the security personnel perform their duties effectively.
According to him, it became clear that power outages affected security at the borders and promised that the government would address the problem by providing solar power to ensure that the country’s borders would always have power.
Mr Muntaka said the security of the country remained paramount on the development agenda of the government and his Ministry was working hard to remove bottlenecks militating against the smooth operations of the security personnel in the country.
He said, “problems identified were problems half-way solved but I am not saying that once the problems were identified, all will be resolved immediately, no but gradually we shall deal with them”, he stressed.
The Minister expressed his satisfaction with the activities of security personnel at the Aflao border, where they worked like a team, which promoted peace and unity among them, stressing that the high spirit of professionalism demonstrated was relevant to ensuring national security.
Mr Muntaka visited pillar seven and nine checkpoints at Aflao and later addressed a cross section of security personnel in Ho including the Prisons Service, the Police, GIS, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) among others, and urged them to work hard , adding that promotions would not automatically be earned after every four years but would be based on merit.
He said government was dealing with the issues of welfare and accommodation challenges confronting security personnel in the country, and assured them that those challenges would soon become a thing of the past
The Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu pledged the Volta Regional Coordinating Council’s (VRCC) preparedness to continue working closely with the security agencies to deepen the existing peace in the region, to facilitate growth.
