The Denkyira State in the Central Region on Monday held a colourful installation and coronation ceremony to formally outdoor the 26th Denkyirahene, Odeefuo Boa Amponsem IV, who many see as a unifying figure and a catalyst for development in the area.
Known in private life as Oscar Mensah Kessie, the new paramount chief — who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Bankam FM at Jukwa — swore the oath of allegiance to the chiefs and people of Denkyira during the ceremony.
The event attracted a large gathering of indigenes of Denkyira and traditional leaders from across the country, who joined in celebrating the installation of a new ruler after a decade-long search for a successor.
Odeefuo Boa Amponsem IV succeeds the late Odeefuo Boa Amponsem III, the 25th Denkyirahene, who passed away in 2015, leaving the Denkyira throne vacant for 10 years.
The last coronation that brought the town to a standstill and showcased Denkyira’s rich cultural heritage was in 1955, when Odeefuo Boa Amponsem III was installed — 70 years ago.
The Methodist School Park at Jukwa, venue for the event, was filled with celebrants in red and black traditional attire, as people danced to authentic kete rhythms that reflected the uniqueness of the Denkyira State.
Before the main ceremony, a minute of silence was observed in honour of individuals who had contributed to the development of Denkyira. Several traditional rituals were performed, accompanied by the beating of kete drums, leading to the oath-taking ceremony.
In his remarks, Odeefuo Boa Amponsem IV pledged his commitment, loyalty, and service to the chiefs and people of Denkyira, both at home and abroad, emphasizing unity and progress as his guiding principles.
