A Fulani man, Abubakar Iddrisu, has been arrested by the Donkorkrom police in the Afram Plains North District of the Eastern Region for alleged attempt to lure his own 14-year old child into forced marriage in Nigeria.
Iddrissu was said to have been intercepted by the police when he was transporting his daughter on a motorcycle, which was heading towards the pontoon landing stage at Agordeke, to cross the Volta Lake to Kpando.
He has been detained by the police to assist in further investigations.
Confirming
the incident to the Ghanaian Times,
the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of
Police (DSP) Ebenezer Tetteh explained that on May 2, at about 10pm, the police
on duty at Adeambra-Donkokrom road intercepted the suspect with his teenage
daughter, Alimatu Sadia Abubakar crying on the motorcycle while they were
heading toward the pontoon landing stage.
He said when
the police questioned the suspect on why his daughter was crying, he alleged
that he was sending her to stay with her grandmother who was living in Nigeria.
DSP Tetteh explained that the victim however denied the claim and told the
police that his father was sending her into forced marriage in Nigeria.
Both suspect and victim were therefore, sent to the Donkokrom police station
where the mother of the victim, Mariama Abubakar was invited to the police
station and she confirmed what the victim had said.
Mariama on arrival, confirmed that her daughter was being sent into forced
marriage in Nigeria, and not to stay with her grandmother as alleged by her
husband.
DSP Tetteh said the suspect had been detained in custody to assist in further investigations.
