The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has restored electricity supply to the Afram Plains, following a major outage caused by damage to a marine cable.

The fault, which occurred about 400 metres into the River Afram in the early hours of last Monday, cut off power to the entire Donkorkrom District.

A specialised Cable Test Van team was dispatched from Accra to trace the fault and begin immediate restoration works.

Briefing journalists last Thursday, the General Manager for External Communications at ECG, Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, said the Eastern Regional Maintenance team had earlier been mobilised to assess the situation.

“Our initial checks confirmed a serious fault on the marine cable, which made it impossible to transmit power across the river,” he said.

Dr Ayiku commended the District Chief Executive for Afram Plains South, Moses Tangbe, for his support during the operation.

“The DCE personally ensured that the Test Van, which got stuck in the mud due to the rough terrain, was pulled out safely, demonstrating strong leadership,” he added.

Despite the difficult conditions, ECG engineers, with support from local residents, adopted innovative measures to restore supply.

Two boats and community divers were deployed to lift sections of the submerged cable from the river, enabling the team to locate and repair the damaged portion.

“In the absence of specialised marine cable joints, the team improvised with standard cable joints to restore supply. A temporary wharf was also constructed to prevent the repaired section from coming into direct contact with the river,” Dr Ayiku explained.

He noted that the swift and coordinated response helped avert a prolonged outage in the area.

Moreover, Dr Ayiku expressed appreciation to all stakeholders, including the regional maintenance team, the Accra Cable Test Van team, the Donkorkrom District team and residents of Ekye Amanfrom and Adawso, for their support.

He said power had now been fully restored and apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused.
