Ecobank Ghana PLC has planted 2,000 trees in the Chipa Forest Reserve in Kordiabe in the Shai Osudoku District in the Greater Accra Region as part of activities marking World Environment Day 2026.

The exercise forms part of the bank’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action through reforestation and conservation initiatives across Ghana.

Speaking at the event here on Thursday, Ada Forest District Manager, Linda Ansah, said the Chipa Forest Reserve had suffered degradation over the years due to illegal harvesting of firewood and other unauthorised activities.

She noted that the government’s Tree for Life initiative, launched by President John Dramani Mahama last year, aimed to reverse environmental degradation through large-scale tree planting nationwide.

“This year, the target is for us to plant 30 million trees across the country,” Ms Ansah said.

“Ecobank was here with us last year, and they have returned this year to plant 2,000 trees.  These are measures to help mitigate climate change and ensure sustainability,” she said.

She stressed that the Forestry Commission’s efforts extend beyond planting trees to nurturing them to maturity through regular maintenance, replacement of failed seedlings, weeding, watering and the creation of fire belts to protect plantations during the dry season.

“We do not only plant as foresters; we nurture whatever we plant to maturity,” she said.

The Head of Corporate Communications at Ecobank Ghana, Dr Daniel Kasser Tee, said the bank’s environmental conservation activities date back to 2012 when it planted more than 1,200 trees at Prampram Senior High School to commemorate World Environment Day.

He explained that although activities were temporarily disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Ecobank resumed and expanded its tree-planting efforts following the launch of the national Tree for Life initiative in 2025.

“Last year, we covered five regions and planted trees in 27 institutions, including schools, churches and hospitals,” Dr Tee said.

According to him, the bank revisited Prampram Senior High School last week, 14 years after its maiden tree-planting exercise, and donated an additional 1,400 trees after observing that most of the original trees had survived.

He said simultaneous planting exercises were also undertaken in Takoradi, Sunyani and Tamale, with Kumasi scheduled to hold its event on Friday.

At the Chipa Forest Reserve, Ecobank has adopted a two-hectare tract of land for reforestation.
