The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has granted permission to Premier League sides, Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Lions, to use the University of Ghana Stadium as their new home ground for the Ghana Premier League.
The move follows the closure of the Accra Sports Stadium for repair works to be carried out.
The National Sports Authority (NSA) announced the decision of the partial closedown of the Accra Sports Stadium which served as home venue for the two clubs on Tuesday, a situation that required the affected teams to look elsewhere.
Before the start of the season, the Phobian selected the
Accra Sports Stadium as their first choice home venue, with the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and the Cape Coast Sports Stadium as an alternative home venue for the 2024-25 season.
However, all these venues have been affected by the directive from the NSA.
After a series of consultations, Hearts opted for the new facility at Legon and wrote to the Football Association to consider that as a venue for their home games.
Confirming the FA’s approval to this paper yesterday, the Communication Director of Hearst, Mr Kwame Opare Addo, said his outfit had received a letter of approval from the FA to use the venue.
“Yes, we have been given approval to use the University of Ghana Stadium for our home games, starting with the next game against Bechem United on Sunday.”
According to him, the FA has also notified the club that its Ghana Premier League match day three game against Bechem United has been fixed for Sunday at 6pm instead of the advertised 3pm.
Until the NSA completes renovations at the Accra Sports Stadium, the Phobians would share the venue with Legon Cities and Accra Lions, who have also written to the FA to use for their home matches.
The decision therefore cancels an earlier request to use the Sogakope WAFA Park.
