The Melcom Group of Companies on Monday presented assorted relief items valued at GH¢500,000 to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for distribution to victims of the June 7 floods.

The items, which include assorted medications such as painkillers and anti-malaria drugs, toiletries, detergents, blankets, plastic products and canned beverages, are to support affected persons during this difficult period.

Presenting the items in Accra, the Chairman of the Melcom Group, Dr Mohammed Awal, expressed the company’s deepest sympathies to individuals and families affected by the devastating floods that hit parts of the capital.

He said images and reports of submerged homes, destroyed businesses and displaced families had highlighted the scale of hardship many Ghanaians were currently facing.

Dr Awal noted that as a leading retail chain, the company believed it had a responsibility to support the communities it served, particularly in times of distress.

He disclosed that over the weekend, the company identified about 400 of its staff who were seriously affected by the floods and provided them with care packages.

He added that the company was donating essential relief items, including food products, beverages, plastic household items and blankets, bringing its total support for flood victims this year to about GH¢500,000.

Dr Awal expressed confidence that the items would be used for their intended purpose to provide comfort and relief to affected families as they began rebuilding their lives.

He commended NADMO, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service and other organisations for their commitment and tireless efforts in coordinating emergency response and relief operations under challenging conditions.

Dr Awal also urged the public to remain united, support one another and observe safety measures, particularly during the rainy season.

He added that despite a recent fire outbreak that destroyed the company’s warehouse in Tema, the company still found it necessary to support flood victims.

The Director-General of NADMO, Major (Rtd) Dr Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, commended Melcom for the gesture and appealed to other corporate bodies and individuals to emulate the example to help alleviate the suffering of affected persons.
