The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, has said the implementation of the Free Primary Healthcare Programme presents an important opportunity to strengthen healthcare delivery and accelerate progress towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Ghana.
He urged medical superintendents to prepare their facilities for the programme by strengthening referral and counter-referral systems, improving patient flow, supporting clinical governance and collaborating closely with district and municipal health directorates.
Dr Akoriyea made the call at the 24th Annual General and Scientific Conference of the Medical Superintendents Group Ghana in Ho on Saturday.
The conference was held on the theme: “Leadership and innovation in free primary healthcare towards achieving universal health coverage in Ghana.”
The President of the Group, Dr Eric Sarpong Ntiamoah, called on medical superintendents to ensure the effective and transparent management of public resources, reduce waste and improve procurement practices.
He said superintendents must build institutions that attract clients, provide care with integrity and treat staff fairly to create an enabling working environment.
The Volta Regional Chairman of the Group, Dr Alphonse Makafui Dzakpasu, said medical superintendents were not merely facility managers but also custodians of quality healthcare, patient safety and limited resources, as well as a vital link between policy and healthcare delivery.
The Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu, said the government was working to extend water supply to health facilities in the region to support the Free Primary Healthcare Programme.
The President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Anfoega Traditional Area, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, who chaired the event, urged the superintendents to continue playing their crucial role in promoting quality healthcare delivery.
