THE Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has called for the immediate relief of their Managing Director for what they described as gross mismanagement, calling for a forensic audit into the finances of the corporation.
The workers, who staged a day’s demonstration at the premises of GBC, listed a litany of reasons why the continuous stay in office by the Director General will further jeopardise the organisation and its staff.
Clad in red and black attire with some wearing red arm bands, the workers chanted various war songs amid chants for the Director General to vacate post.
Addressing the media at a press conference yesterday in Accra, Senior Management Union Chairman, Mr Ebenezar Odzaho, expressed disappointment that management ignored their demands to reverse these decisions, made through the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU).
The Union, he emphasised, has lost confidence in its Director-General, Professor Amin Alhassan’s leadership, citing “serious mismanagement” of resources and “financial malfeasance”, including the sale of GBC lands and unpaid staff benefits.
According to Mr Odzaho, Management’s actions were a deliberate attempt to delay the process and undermine staff morale and the wellbeing of the corporation. “The situation has been ongoing for some time, with the union calling on governments to take interest in the affairs of the state broadcaster,” he mentioned.
The Divisional Chairman of GBC Union, Mr Sam Nat Kevor, said the protest was in line with issues going on in the corporation citing overwhelming challenges facing staff, including alleged victimisation, poor working conditions, and neglect.
Mr Kevor said staff were being forced to work in unacceptable conditions, with no buses, inadequate equipment, and poor facilities, adding that it was undermining the welfare of the staff.
He added that staff had been reduced to timidity, and that it was only the executives who were being called to address the situation.
He emphasised that it was the staff who gave the union its mandate, and that it was through their collaboration that the challenges could be resolved.
