GETFund’s GH¢400m commitment: Turning promise into performance

The decision by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to award a GH¢400 million contract for the procurement of modern medical equipment for a teaching hospital at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is, by all accounts, a bold and timely intervention.

At a time when Ghana’s healthcare and tertiary education systems are under immense strain, such an investment offers a glimmer of hope.

It signals an intention not only to expand infrastructure but also to deepen the quality of training for the country’s next generation of medical professionals.

According to a statement issued by GETFund in Accra, “The intervention reflects government’s commitment to transforming key public universities into centres of excellence that combine academic training, research, and practical service delivery.”

That commitment, if pursued with discipline and transparency, deserves commendation.

The promise that, “When completed and fully equipped, the KNUST Teaching Hospital will serve as a critical hub for clinical training, advanced medical research, and specialised healthcare services,” is therefore not just aspirational; it is necessary.

Indeed, the potential benefits are far-reaching. The facility is expected to provide hands-on training for medical students, support innovation in key medical fields, and improve access to specialised healthcare services in the Ashanti Region and beyond.

In a country where access to quality healthcare remains uneven, such a development cannot be taken lightly.

The recognition given to key figures who have championed the project is also appropriate.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is rightly credited for his sustained advocacy.

As GETFund Administrator Mr Paul Adjei noted, “His consistent push for the project and commitment to advancing healthcare infrastructure in Ghana significantly contributed to its realisation.”

Similarly, the role of KNUST’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, in advancing the project speaks to the importance of leadership in national development.

The Ghanaian Times believes that while the applause is justified, it must be measured.

Ghana has, over the years, announced many ambitious projects, some completed, others stalled, and a few that have failed to deliver the transformative impact promised.

The KNUST Teaching Hospital must not be allowed to fall into the latter category.

The real test lies ahead. Will this GH¢400 million investment be managed with the transparency and accountability that public funds demand?

Will the procurement process withstand scrutiny? More importantly, will the hospital, once completed, be adequately staffed, maintained, and integrated into the national healthcare system to deliver on its mandate?

These are not idle questions. They are necessary ones.

Infrastructure alone does not guarantee excellence. Without proper planning, sustained funding, and efficient management, even the most modern facility can quickly deteriorate into mediocrity.

Ghana cannot afford such an outcome, especially not in a sector as critical as healthcare.

This is why The Ghanaian Times urges stakeholders to go beyond merely welcoming the initiative.

Continuous oversight, rigorous monitoring, and clear timelines must define the implementation of this project.

The Ministry of Health, GETFund, and KNUST authorities must work in close coordination to ensure that the hospital becomes a model of efficiency rather than another cautionary tale.

The KNUST Teaching Hospital presents Ghana with an opportunity to demonstrate that with the right intent and execution, public investment can yield tangible, lasting benefits.

But opportunity alone is not enough. It must be matched with discipline, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to results.

Ghanaians will be watching. And rightly so.

The call, therefore, is clear: deliver not just a building, but a fully functional, world-class teaching hospital that justifies every cedi invested.

Anything less would be a disservice to the nation.
