The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has congratulated Ing Professor Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko on his appointment as Chair of the Engineering Education Committee of the Federation of African Engineering Organisations for the 2026 to 2029 term.
It said the appointment, which followed the approval of a proposal endorsed by the FAEO Executive Council to host the committee in Ghana, marked a significant milestone for both the engineering profession and the country.
A statement issued by the GhIE and copied to the Ghanaian Times said the successful endorsement through a competitive process positioned Ghana at the forefront of shaping engineering education across Africa.
It noted that the hosting of the committee presented an opportunity to drive innovation in curriculum development, strengthen knowledge exchange, and promote best practices to equip future engineers to address the continent’s development challenges.
Ing Prof. Nyarko, who is the Provost of the College of Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, was described as a distinguished academic and professional engineer with over three decades of experience.
The statement highlighted his contributions to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene engineering, indicating that his work had influenced policy, strengthened institutions, and improved service delivery across several African countries.
It further indicated that during his tenure at KNUST, he rose through the academic ranks from Lecturer to Provost, where he led institutional transformation and mobilised more than 25 million dollars in research and capacity building grants.
Additionally, it said he doubled the College’s endowment fund and expanded its alumni network to over 16,000 members to support engineering education and sustainable development.
The GhIE also commended his commitment to mentorship, noting that through supervision and scholarly work, he had trained a generation of engineers with strong technical and leadership skills.
It added that his service as a Council Member of the Institution and his role in national engineering governance demonstrated his leadership at the intersection of policy, practice and education.
The statement expressed confidence that under his leadership, the FAEO Engineering Education Committee would deliver impactful outcomes and strengthen engineering capacity across the African continent.
