The Aflao Sector Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (DCOI), Mark Asamoah-Boakye, has said emerging security threats, technological developments, evolving migration patterns and transnational organised crime continue to challenge effective border management.
He explained that in response to these developments, the GIS had rolled out a comprehensive capacity-building programme to equip officers with the skills needed to deliver on their mandate and meet growing public expectations.
DCOI Asamoah-Boakye was speaking at the opening of a three-week training programme for personnel on the theme: ‘Enhancing Professional Excellence in Service Delivery.’
He said the training formed part of the Service’s broader commitment to continuous professional development and the strengthening of institutional capacity at the country’s entry and exit points.
According to him, the programme is being implemented in phases and will run until December, in line with the strategic direction of the Controller-General of the GIS to enhance professionalism, operational readiness and service delivery nationwide.
DCOI Asamoah-Boakye noted that deepening officers’ knowledge in document security and fraud detection would improve their ability to identify altered travel documents and combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling at the borders.
He added that the programme would also strengthen collaboration between officers and border communities in tackling human trafficking, smuggling and other cross-border crimes.
The Aflao Sector Commander said the training involved officers from various operational units, focusing on areas directly linked to modern border management practices to enhance security at the borders.
He expressed confidence that the programme would significantly improve operational efficiency and customer service, as well as strengthen interactions between officers and the travelling public.
The three-week training programme will cover topics such as customer service excellence, basic french, world regional geography, migration patterns, human trafficking, migrant smuggling and community engagement.
