GLICO General Insurance has presented a total of GH¢2 million in insurance benefits and donations to families of the “Gallant Eight.”

Out of the total amount, GH¢1.8 million would be given directly to the beneficiaries of the eight deceased officials.

The “Gallant Eight” refers to eight prominent figures who were tragically killed in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, while traveling to an event in Obuasi.

The remaining GH¢200,000 was donated to the President’s Children’s Trust Fund, and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), GH¢100,000 each.

Presenting the cheque to the beneficiaries, the Managing Director (MD) of GLICO General Insurance, Mr Andrew Achampong-Kyei, said the presentation was a matter of duty and compassion expressing hope that it provided the bereaved families a modicum of comfort and sustainability.

Mr Achampong-Kyei also highlighted GLICO’s long-standing commitment to corporate social responsibility, noting that for over 40 years, it had worked to ‘cushion’ individuals through insurance and community support.

“We have stood with communities through education support, scholarships, and literacy campaigns. We have stood with families through life and health insurance that provided medical access and dignity in illness,” he said.

He further called for a stronger national commitment to insurance preparedness.

“We cannot, as a people, allow insurance to remain optional, partial, or selective. Preparedness must become the standard, not the exception,” he said.

He urged the government, ministries and all stakeholders to make insurance a necessity rather than luxury.

“No one insurer can carry the weight of a national tragedy. But together- insurers, co-insurers, reinsurers, and government- we can,” he added.

Receiving the cheque on behalf of the President, John Dramani Mahama for the Child Support Fund set up for the welfare of the children of the Z-9 military helicopter crash victims, the Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim commended GLICO for the generous gesture.

She also appealed to the public especially the media to be sensitive to the plight of the bereaved families in their grieving moments.

She further encouraged other institutions and the public to support the families and the Children’s Trust Fund.

The Chairman of GLICO Group Limited, Mr Kwame Achampong-Kyei, in a speech read on his behalf by the Group CEO, Mr Edward Forkuo Kyei, said support was important to the bereaved families in times of grieving.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Commission (NIC), Dr Abiba Zakariah, pledged the commission’s commitment in upholding their promises made to the bereaved families and to the society at large

In attendance were high-ranking government officials, military representatives, and the bereaved families.
