The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), under a new leadership spearheaded by its president, Mr Richard Akpokavie, has vowed that completion of the OlympAfrica Community Sports Development facility sited at Amasaman will be given topmost priority by the board

Mr Akpokavi gave the vow during a working visit with members of the GOC board to the facility inaugurated under the B.T Baba tenure as president many years ago.

The purpose of the visit was to assess the state of the facility and engage in discussions on strategies for its development.

During the tour, the GOC Executive Board had the opportunity to witness firsthand the potential of the OlympAfrica project in promoting sports development in Ghana.

After the tour, President Akpokavie expressed worry about the neglect and the slow pace of work since the acquisition in 2010.

He, however, stated that the new administration was committed in ensuring that the pace of work improves to complete the facility to boost sports development at the community level.

And since the GOC alone cannot shoulder that responsibility, he highlighted the importance of collaboration with stakeholders to complete the facility to enhance youth training and sports development in local communities.

He emphasised that the OlympAfrica project has the potential to serve as a hub for identifying and nurturing young sporting talent in Ghana.

The GOC, he stated, was committed to the project’s success with an expedite action, expected to have a positive impact on sports development in Ghana, particularly in Amasaman locality.

Beyond the community development initiative, the GOC aims to provide opportunities for young athletes to develop their skills and compete at the highest levels in order to create an enabling environment for national teams camping at the facility.

“The OlympAfrica project will play a crucial role in shaping the future of sports in Ghana, and the GOC is dedicated to its successful completion through the strategic and aggressive engagement with corporate institutions,” GOC president, Mr Akpokavie stated.
