The government of Ghana has announced a series of measures to advance the global reparations agenda following the adoption of a landmark United Nations resolution, A/RES/80/250, tabled by Ghana at the recent UN session in New York. The resolution is expected to serve as a framework for renewed international engagement on reparatory justice.

Speaking at a news conference in Accra, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said Ghana is committed to pursuing historical justice, equity, and recognition for Africans and people of African descent. He outlined plans for collaboration with key regional and international bodies, including the African Union (AU), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and the Organisation of American States (OAS), to promote justice and equity globally.

Mr Ablakwa emphasized that Ghana would engage all UN member states, including those that did not support the resolution, to ensure its effective implementation and to deepen dialogue on reparatory justice. He stated, “Ghana will continue to work with deep resolve to put in place the necessary mechanisms to support the implementation of this resolution globally.”

He noted that Ghana’s stance is grounded in Pan-African ideals and the nation’s commitment to addressing historical injustices. The resolution, he explained, is a major step in confronting the enduring legacy of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and systemic inequalities.

The government also plans to work with international partners, regional bodies, and civil society organizations to support cooperation in education, cultural restitution, research, and institutional reforms. The resolution provides a structured framework for reparations, including formal apologies, restitution of cultural artefacts, and measures to address structural discrimination.

Ghana’s proactive role underscores its leadership in advancing global reparatory justice and addressing historical inequities affecting people of African descent.
