A total of 12,000 pupils from 39 basic schools in the Greater Accra Region have benefited from the maiden edition of the ‘Express Myself with My BIC Pen’ challenge.

The challenge was an initiative aimed at improving handwriting, creativity, and self-expression among schoolchildren.

The Stationery Brand Manager for BIC West and Central Africa, Mr Morel Kouakou, disclosed this at the programme’s award ceremony in Accra on Friday, said the initiative had exceeded its initial target of reaching 10,000 pupils and engaged more than 400 teachers.

He said the challenge was introduced in Ghana following its success in East Africa, with Ghana becoming the first country in West Africa to implement the initiative because of its educational potential and commitment to quality learning.

“The idea behind the programme is to help children transition from pencil to pen using quality writing tools while building their confidence and helping them write the future of Africa,” he stated.

According to him, the programme targeted pupils from Basic Four to Basic Six and involved weekly handwriting and creative exercises conducted over four weeks.

Mr Kouakou noted that although 44 schools initially enrolled in the programme, 39 successfully completed the implementation phase.

The participating pupils were provided with exercise books and engaged in structured activities focusing on handwriting, drawing, and story writing. Six outstanding schools were awarded for excellence in writing, drawing, and storytelling, while all participants received certificates of completion.

The Okaikoi North Municipal Director of Education, Mrs Cynthia Aboni, commended BIC for the intervention and underscored the importance of good handwriting in academic achievement.

She said handwriting remained an essential skill for effective communication and academic success, urging teachers and stakeholders in the education sector to continue promoting neat and legible handwriting among learners.
