The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) recorded GH¢228 million in revenue in 2025, representing an 18 per cent increase over the previous year, the Director-General of the Authority, Professor George Agyei, has disclosed.
The Authority also verified 242,764 weights, measures and weighing instruments, calibrated 26,091 industrial instruments and tested 28,375 product samples during the year, exceeding several of its annual targets.
Professor Agyei disclosed this at the 2025 Annual Stakeholders’ Meeting (ASM) of the GSA in Accra yesterday.
He attributed the increase in revenue to intensified efforts to strengthen quality assurance and consumer protection in the country.
He said the number of weights, measures and weighing instruments verified represented a six per cent increase over the previous year, while the 26,091 industrial instruments calibrated exceeded the annual target by 25 per cent.
Professor Agyei said the Authority’s laboratories also tested 28,375 product samples, 31 per cent above the annual target and 22 per cent higher than the number tested in 2024.
He added that the GSA issued 1,259 certificates to local manufacturers, representing a 12 per cent improvement over the previous year.
According to him, the figures demonstrated the Authority’s efforts to ensure that products entering the Ghanaian market met the required standards and that consumers were adequately protected.
Professor Agyei said the improved financial performance was achieved through disciplined management of the Authority’s resources, adding that the surplus transferred to its accumulated fund increased fivefold.
Standards gap
Professor Agyei, however, acknowledged that the Authority continued to face challenges, particularly in the development of standards.
He said only 40 per cent of the 426 standards targeted for development were achieved, describing the performance as an honest assessment of an area requiring greater attention.
He urged stakeholders to contribute their expertise and practical experience to help the GSA close the gap.
Professor Agyei said the stakeholder meeting was intended to provide a platform for stakeholders to interrogate the Authority’s performance, challenge its plans and offer practical suggestions.
He also announced that Ghana would host the 33rd General Assembly of the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) in Accra in July 2027, as the organisation marks its 50th anniversary.
Stakeholder participation
The Chairman of the Governing Board of the GSA, Alhaji Hudu Mogtari, said the Authority could not effectively discharge its mandate without the active participation of industry, consumers, regulators and other partners.
He said standards developed in offices had to be tested against realities in factories, markets and export terminals to ensure that they created value.
He reiterated the commitment of the Board, management and staff to improving service delivery, strengthening public trust and aligning the Authority’s work with the country’s development priorities.
The Authority also stressed the critical role of quality infrastructure in Ghana’s industrial transformation, saying the country’s 24-hour economy and export ambitions could not succeed without reliable standards, testing and certification systems.
It said standardisation, metrology and conformity assessment were essential to ensuring that products manufactured, consumed and exported by Ghana met recognised quality and safety requirements and competed effectively on international markets.
