The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) Composite Index gained 1.33 per cent last week, even as trading activity weakened significantly, with the total value of shares traded falling by more than 28 per cent compared with the previous week.
The Composite Index closed the week at 14,071.44 points, up from 13,886.74 points the previous week, while the market capitalisation edged up to GH¢266.70 billion from GH¢266.27 billion.
However, the value of shares traded fell to GH¢104.63 million from GH¢145.82 million, representing a 28.25 per cent decline.
The volume of shares traded also dropped by 26.25 per cent to 18.83 million shares from 25.53 million shares in the preceding week.
The performance reflected a market where selected stocks recorded strong price gains, although overall investor activity was comparatively subdued.
MTN Ghana was the dominant stock on the market, accounting for GH¢94.47 million, or about 90 per cent, of the total value traded during the week.
GCB Bank followed with GH¢1.85 million, while CAL Bank recorded GH¢1.21 million. Enterprise Group and Kasa also featured among the five most-traded stocks by value, with GH¢998,429 and GH¢987,416 respectively.
In terms of volume, MTN Ghana again led the market with 14.52 million shares changing hands. CAL Bank followed with 1.72 million shares, while Kasa, Enterprise Group and Digicut recorded 541,402, 526,791 and 349,022 shares respectively.
Hords emerged as the best-performing stock for the week, rising 18.03 per cent from GH¢0.61 to GH¢0.72.
Digicut followed with a 15.91 per cent gain, moving from GH¢0.44 to GH¢0.51, while CPC advanced 15.38 per cent from GH¢0.26 to GH¢0.30.
AADS gained 9.52 per cent to close at GH¢0.46, while EGL rose five per cent to GH¢7.35.
MTN Ghana, one of the most actively traded stocks, also gained 4.50 per cent, moving from GH¢6.22 to GH¢6.50.
Kasa rose 2.79 per cent to GH¢1.84. The average price change for the week was 1.38 per cent.
Sogegah recorded the biggest decline among the losing stocks, falling 7.27 per cent from GH¢5.50 to GH¢5.10.
Goil declined 7.21 per cent to GH¢5.66, while SIC dropped 7.20 per cent to GH¢4.64.
Total fell 6.56 per cent to GH¢35.32, with Das Pharma declining 5.88 per cent to GH¢1.12.
ETI shed 5.33 per cent to GH¢1.60, while IIL fell 3.92 per cent to GH¢0.49.
CAL Bank declined 1.37 per cent to GH¢0.72, while RBGH and Clyd recorded marginal declines of 0.99 per cent and 0.50 per cent respectively.
GCB Bank was almost unchanged, slipping 0.12 per cent to GH¢40.
Despite the mixed individual stock performance, the market’s year-to-date performance remained positive, with the GSE Composite Index continuing to record substantial gains.
