Karpowership Ghana Company Limited in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, on Thursday, marked the International Day of the Girl Child in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis of the Western Region.
The day, which was part of a sensitisation programmes, was held on the theme, ‘Empowering girls for a brighter tomorrow’ and attracted 200 students from 10 basic and Senior High Schools (SHSs).
Students were mentored on how to identify their career,learnt basics of savings and how to overcome peer pressure.
October 11, each year, is marked worldwide, to create awareness about the potentials of the girl-child, bridge gender gaps and also prepare girls torealise their future aspirations.
The Corporate Communications Specialist of Karpowership Ghana, Miss Sandra Amarquaye, explained that one objective of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects was to achieve gender equality in fulfilment of the United Nations(UN) sustainable goal five.
“We are very excited to have worked with Karpowership to commemorate the international day of the girl-child today. I would call upon other institutions to emulate this gesture.”she said
Karpowership Ghana Company Limited, she said, focused on social investments on education, economic empowerment and environmental sustainability and mentioned that bursary schemes had be given to more than 100 students in the Tema Manhean Municipality while an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Laboratory had also been furnished.
“Karpowership is a firm promoter of the Girl-Child. We believe in inspiring and empowering young women to dream. When girls are empowered through access to good education and healthcare, it eventually leads to healthier families” Ms Amarquayesaid
The Head of Human Resource at Sekondi-Takoradi Metro office of the GES, Mr MartinAckah, lauded Karpowership for the partnership, saying that “empowering the ladies is very important.”
The Acting Western Regional Director of the Department of Gender, Madam Maribel Okine, also said the ministry was working towards educating young ladies to overcome the various challenges they faced in the society.
