THE International Police Organisation (INTERPOL) has permanently deleted the Red Notice issued against formal Ghana’s Minister of Finance, Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, his lawyers announced on Saturday.

Mr Ofori-Atta, currently held at an ICE detention facility in Virginia, United States, was notified by INTERPOL’s Commission for the Control of Files (CCF) that the notice “appears of a predominantly political character” and violated INTERPOL rules.

The CCF found out that the data submitted by Ghana’s National Central Bureau were non-compliant and should be removed from INTERPOL’s system.

INTERPOL also observed that the notice had become unnecessary as Mr Ofori-Atta’s location was known, cooperation with U.S. authorities was ongoing, and extradition procedures had been initiated.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) confirmed that summons issued by the High Court in Accra had been transmitted for service in the U.S., requiring his appearance to answer multiple criminal charges.

The OSP emphasised its commitment to due process, evidence-based prosecution, and lawful handling of corruption-related offences.

Mr Ofori-Atta travelled to the United States on January 4, 2025, for medical treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, and was arrested by ICE in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2026. Until his arrest, he had been declared a fugitive by the OSP over allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement linked to Strategic Mobilisation Limited and six others, involving 78 counts and GH¢1.4 billion in state losses.

He was taken from his residence at the Westlight apartment complex in the affluent West End of Washington, D.C., to the Caroline Detention Facility in Virginia.

Mr Ofori-Atta holds valid visas for the U.S., United Kingdom, and Canada, with his U.S. visa expiring on February 14, 2026.

The trial against him continues before a High Court in Accra.
