The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has presented a consignment of relief items to the government of Ghana worth US1 million to support communities affected by the June 29 devastating floods.
The humanitarian assistance, presented through the Minister of States in charge of Climate Change and sustainability, Seidu Issifu, is part of the UAE’s emergency response and solidarity with the people of Ghana during the difficult period.
The relief items include food items, toileteries, and beddies among other essential supplies.
The gesture is expected to complement the efforts of the Government and the National Disaster Management Organisation in providing relief and assistance to affected families and communities.
Speaking at the presentation in Accra on Monday, Mr Issifu expressed Ghana’s appreciation to the government and the people of the UAE for the timely support.
He said the donation demonstrated the importance of international cooperation and solidarity in responding to disasters, particularly at the time when climate related activities continuing to pose significant threats to communities and livelihoods.
Mr Issifu assured that the items would be channeled through appropriate disaster management structures to ensure that they reached families and communities most in need of them.
“These items will go a long way to support our efforts to reach out to our compatriots who were affected by the floods and I can assure you that they’ll get to the people deserving of them most,” he stated.
The minister further stressed the government’s commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness climate resilience, and coordinated emergency response mechanisms to protect vulnerable communities from the growing impact of climate change.
He said partnerships such as the one demonstrated by the UAE were critical to strengthening Ghana’s ability to respond effectively to climate emergencies and protect vulnerable populations.
The Executive Director of Operations at the UAE Aid, Rashid Al Shamsi, on his part expressed sympathy to the affected families and communities and commended government for the response.
According to Mr Al Shamsi, the gulf country considers assistance to countries in times of need a shared responsibility underscored by unity and cooperation.
“In this regard, we stand with Ghana and support your national efforts to help those affected and to assist recovery,” he said
