A former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Jones Dotse, has urged the government to step up efforts to provide adequate infrastructure in Senior High Schools (SHSs) to enhance quality teaching and learning.
According to him, addressing infrastructure challenges such as overcrowding would create a more conducive environment for effective academic work and holistic development.
Justice Dotse made the appeal at the 72nd Speech and Prize Giving Day of the Kpando Senior High School (KPANSEC), held in the Kpando Municipality of the Volta Region. The event, organised by the school’s 2000 year group to mark their 25th anniversary, was on the theme: “Nurturing Discipline, Inspiring Excellence: A Collective Responsibility of Parents and Teachers.”
The retired Supreme Court judge, who is an old student of the school, emphasized the need for all stakeholders to play active roles in the ongoing review of the Free SHS policy to ensure its long-term success.
He said meaningful discussions and practical reforms were necessary to tackle challenges associated with the policy, stressing that “the Free SHS policy can only succeed if we confront its realities and find sustainable solutions.”
The Headmaster of KPANSEC, Mr Charles Evans Apreku, commended the Kpando Old Students Association (KOSA) for their continuous support towards the school’s growth, especially in improving its infrastructure.
He noted that the school’s strong culture of discipline had translated into academic excellence, with many of its alumni occupying key positions in various sectors.
Mr Apreku encouraged current students to make the most of the opportunities available in education, urging them to prepare themselves to contribute meaningfully to national development.
The President of KOSA, Mr Kwaku Bansah, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to supporting the school’s development. He appealed to the government to provide an auditorium and other essential facilities to meet the demands of the growing student population.
As part of the celebration, 25 students were honoured for their outstanding academic achievements. The overall best student, Master Desmond Zormelo, received a laptop and GH¢3,000, while the best teacher, Mr Pascal Kpemli, was presented with a plaque and GH¢2,000.
