THE Minister of Transport, Mr Joseph Bukari Nukpe, has revealed that plans are in place to convert Terminal 2 of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) into a multipurpose terminal through the construction of a connecting concourse between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.

According to him, the plan is important as it would reduce the overcrowding often experienced at Terminal 3 during peak hours, which causes discomfort to passengers, while Terminal 2 remains underutilised at the same time.

Mr Nukpe revealed the plans when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday, together with officials from the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), including the Managing Director, Mrs Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare.

He explained that once completed, the terminal would serve both domestic and international passengers, thereby improving comfort and easing travel at KIA.

Furthermore, Mr Nukpe described the proposed move as a high-priority project of the government, scheduled for implementation this year.

“We experience a lot of congestion in the evening at Terminal 3. We have Terminal 2 that is not that busy when we get to peak hours. The mind is to do a connecting concourse between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 just to facilitate the movement of our international passengers so that we can share Terminal 2 with Terminal 3 for international passengers,” Mr Nukpe elaborated.

“It is a high government priority project which will bring some kind of comfort to our international passengers. Terminal 2 will now be a multipurpose terminal for both domestic and international passengers as well,” he added.
