The Alumni Association of the Koforidua Technical University (KTU) has elected Mr Ebenezer Doku as its National President for a two-year term.
The election took place last Saturday during the association’s fifth annual delegates’ conference held in Accra.
Mr Doku secured 30 out of 56 votes cast, beating three other contestants — Dr Eric Kofi Boadi, who polled 20 votes; Mr Stephen Sawodji Kwame, 14; and Mr Louis Appiah, two.
The conference was held on the theme: ‘Unity in a Strong Alma Mater: A Bond for University Development.’
Mr Doku, a former Municipal Chief Executive for Adentan in the Greater Accra Region, called for unity among members to help build their alma mater.
He acknowledged the contributions of previous executives, but stressed that more is needed to be done to position the university to compete globally.
“The foundation has been built,” he said, adding that “What we need now is a strong and united front to address the numerous challenges confronting our alma mater.”
Mr Doku also pledged to run an all-inclusive administration, aimed at attracting more members and engaging those who are yet to actively participate in the association’s activities.
A member of the Council of Elders, Ms Alice Zu, who was the guest speaker, urged the alumni to forge lifelong partnerships that would sustain their ambitions.
“The power of a professional network through the alumni unfolds when you reach out to a fellow alumnus. You are not just calling a family with an instant bond of trust that opens doors, but an engine of optimisation which stays locked for everyone else. Your degree is the key, but the network is the engine,” she stated.
She added that growth did not end at graduation but continues through the acquisition of new skills, which keeps individuals competitive in their fields. In that regard, she described the alumni association as vital social capital that helps level the playing field.
Ms Zu further charged the new executives to live up to expectations and build on the legacy of their predecessors.
The Chair of the Council of Elders, Mr Richard Asante Amoah, who recounted their first arrival on campus in 2001, paid tribute to the late Koforiduahene, Emeritus Professor Oti Boateng, whose dedication and support helped transform the university into its current status.
He called for a stronger reorganisation of the association through the creation of more chapters, the development of new strategies, and the forging of partnerships and alliances in order to ensure its long-term sustainability.
