The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Zongo Development Fund and the US-based NGO, I Give Foundation, to construct a modern sports complex for the area.
The facility, to be known as the Madina Sports, Health, Wellness and Business Community Hub, will include a standard football pitch, basketball and volleyball courts, classrooms, and children’s playgrounds when completed.
The project, which will be executed in phases, is aimed at nurturing young sporting talent while combining education, skills development and job creation through sporting activities.
The Municipal Chief Executive of LaNMMA, Alhaji Ibrahim Fuseini Faila, signed on behalf of the Assembly, while Alhaji Halidu Haruna signed for the Zongo Development Fund, and Mr Jerry Johnson, Founder of I Give Foundation, signed for his organisation.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Accra yesterday, Alhaji Haruna said the facility would provide a platform for the registration of youth and school teams to help identify and develop untapped sporting talent in the municipality.
He added that the project would also support youth training in education and promote peaceful coexistence to foster development in the area.
According to him, the Zongo Development Fund was established to mobilise resources and provide infrastructure in education, security, skills training, and support for vulnerable groups in society.
He explained that “Zongo” is not a religion, but a community of settlements that are equally entitled to development support.
Alhaji Haruna noted that he had mobilised the foundation to support the initiative, adding that the allocated land for the project was large enough to accommodate all planned facilities.
Mr Jerry Johnson commended the Zongo Development Fund for the partnership and assured that his organisation would ensure the successful completion of the project.
He said the initiative was community-focused and would provide various skills training opportunities for young people to enable them to earn a living.
He added that special attention would be given to girls, particularly those in school, to benefit from the opportunities the project would offer.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Faila, expressed appreciation to the Zongo Development Fund for including the municipality in the project.
He assured that the assembly would provide the necessary support in order to ensure the successful execution of the development.
