The Central Regional Imam of Ahlusunnah Waljama (ASWAJ), Sheikh Ahmed Haroun Toure Jawara, has called on stakeholders within Muslim communities to unite and complement government efforts aimed at promoting quality education delivery in the country.

He stressed that education remained a key tool for transforming lives and urged Muslim leaders, institutions and individuals to ensure that every Muslim child had access to quality education.

Sheikh Jawara made the call at the maiden graduation ceremony of Al-Arqam Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies held at Agona Swedru in the Central Region.

He noted that government alone could not shoulder the burden of providing education and therefore emphasised the need for private sector participation and community support in the delivery of education.

In all, 45 students graduated from the institute, made up of four females and 41 males.

The Administrator of the school, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammed, outlined a number of infrastructural challenges confronting the institute, which he said needed to be addressed for the school to attain the status of a College of Education.

He mentioned the lack of an administration block, library, assembly hall, sports facilities, dining hall, school bus and dormitory as some of the major challenges facing the institution.

Alhaji Muhammed explained that the school was established following numerous complaints from parents whose wards attended mission schools and were not permitted to wear the veil.

He said after operating for a few years, the school collapsed due to the introduction of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

As a result, he noted, the school was transformed into a College of Education in line with the vision of the late Sheikh Abdul Nasir, the founder of the institution.

According to him, Sheikh Nasir acquired a ten-acre parcel of land over three decades ago through the Holy Quran Foundation for the establishment of the school.
