Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has asked students, especially those in the Greater Accra Region, to use the internet wisely.

“The government can build schools, provide teachers, and supply computers but the most important ingredient in your success is you. Use technology wisely,” Ms Ocloo said.

In a speech read on her behalf at the International Literacy Day 2025 under the theme: “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era, ” she reminded the students that the internet was meant to teach them, inspire them, and connect them with the world.

Ms Ocloo who is also the Member of Parliament for Shai-Osudoku Constituency urged the students to consider the internet as a tool, and like every tool, it must be used responsibly.

“Do not let it distract you — let it shape you into the leaders, inventors, and nation-builders that Ghana needs,” the Greater Accra Regional Minister noted adding that “the theme was timely as it sought to prepare Ghana’s next generation for leadership, innovation, and global competitiveness.”

The event was organised by Engage Now Africa in partnership with MTN Ghana and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day-Saints.

In attendance were the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, and Ms Cecilia Amankwah, Country Director, Engage Now Africa.

International Literacy Day is commemorated every year and focuses on digital skills, expanding digital learning in public libraries, and empowering young people, especially girls in rural areas, with computer literacy for future opportunities.

Ms Ocloo said she would work hand in hand with the sector ministry, schools, communities, and partners like Engage Now Africa to make sure that children had access to books, technology, and safe spaces for learning.

She said the government was committed to providing good quality to Ghanaians.

Again, the Greater Accra Regional Minister said education was the bridge that takes a child from poverty to possibility, from dreams to achievement.

In addition, Ms Ocloo noted that technical and vocational education remain the gateway to industrialisation and economic development.
