Former President, John Mahama has donated GH¢1,953,000 to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to aid the party in its internal elections which commenced yesterday.
The party said GH¢853,000 was for the conduct of the regional elections and the balance for a debt owed to the Electoral Commission (EC) for the conduct of the constituency elections.
“The NDC’s flag bearer for the 2020 elections has donated an amount totaling GH¢1, 953,000 to support the conduct of the party’s constituency and regional internal elections and the donation is made up of an amount of GHC¢853,000 to the leadership of the party for the organisation of regional election conferences across the country and an amount of GH¢1,100,000 to the Electoral Commission to clear the debt owed them by the party in respect to the just-ended constituency elections of the party,” it said.
In a release, it said the party was grateful to former President Mahama for his generosity for coming to the assistance and support of the party at this crucial time.
Meanwhile, the family of former President John Mahama has dismissed claims of having preferred candidates in the upcoming NDC internal elections.
It said no member of the family was aligned and supports any of the candidates as being alleged and the public, members, supporters, sympathisers, faithful and well-wishers of the party should disregard the said reports.
A statement signed and issued by Rafik Mahama, Secretary to the family said reports reaching the family of the former president indicated that some persons had associated their names with certain candidates in the upcoming internal elections of the NDC and for the avoidance of doubt, no member of the Mahama family, including the former president had any preferred candidates.
It said the family had absolute belief in the ability of delegates of the party to elect, out of its rich pool of qualified candidates, the best to serve in various positions being contested and the family wished all candidates best of luck in the upcoming internal elections.
