The Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association (GNACOFA), in collaboration with Pan-African Non-Governmental Organisation and Africa for Glory Agenda, have launched the first edition of the Cocoa Cup Soccer tournament.
The aim is to stimulate demand and strengthen support for cocoa farmers and the entire cocoa sector.
The tournament will see two top Ghana Premier League clubs face off in a play-off game for a chance to play in the main tournament in Brazil in July 2027, where they will take on clubs selected from three cocoa-producing countries and four cocoa-consuming countries.
Launching the event, the president of the GNACOFA, Ing. Stephenson Anane Boateng, said they chose football as a vehicle to promote cocoa.
“Football provides a fun and engaging avenue to educate the public on where cocoa comes from, the importance of sustainable sourcing and the irreplaceable role of farmers,” he mentioned.
He revealed that they were in talks with Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko to be involved in the play-off on February 1, 2026 for the chance to be in Brazil.
The Chief Executive Officer for Africa For Glory Agenda, Mr Ernest Adjei, noted that the contribution of Ghana’s cocoa farmers to national development deserves acknowledgement and celebration, and they see football as one of the tools to drive it.
