The police in Kumasi have arrested Edwin Awuku, 42, for allegedly shooting and killing Comfort Owusu Afriyie, believed to be his girlfriend, at the Cedar Crescents Hotel at Danyame, Kumasi, on January 2, this year.
A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency by the police in Kumasi and signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Godwin Ahianyor, the Public Affairs Officer, said preliminary investigation has been carried out.
It indicated that the killing of the woman in a hotel room was not related to armed robbery as was initially reported to the Kumasi Central Police by the wife of Awuku.
The statement said Awuku checked in at the hotel with the deceased, Comfort Owusu Afriyie, also known as Maame Yaa, on that fateful day.
It said while in the hotel room with the deceased, Awuku shot her in the chest killing her instantly.
In the process suspect Awuku, who sustained injury on his left forefinger, fled the scene, and drove his car to his residence at Amakom in Kumasi.
The statement indicated that after informing his wife about the incident, Awuku left the gun used in committing the crime and his mobile phone at home.
The suspect and his wife together drove back to the hotel and raised the alarm about the incident, which drew the attention of inmates, staff of the hotel and other people to the scene.
The two later went to the Kumasi Central Police Station, where an official complaint of an armed robbery and murder was made.
The statement said the police have retrieved the pistol together with an empty shell and mobile phone from the suspect’s residence at Amakom, and a docket on the case has been forwarded to the Attorney General’s office for advice. -GNA
