Man in court for allegedly assaulting step-mother

35-year-old man yesterday appeared before the Accra Circuit Court charged with alleged assault.

George Afriyie, is said to have assaulted his step-mother, Agnes Churchill, following a misunderstanding over food.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded in police custody by the court presided over by Mr Samuel Mensah.

The accused would appear again on September 27.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector of Police Faustina Gyaba told the court, that on August 10, the accused assaulted Mrs Churchill, whose husband is deceased and was staying in their family home at Alajo, in Accra.

The prosecution said the accused lived in the same house as his step-mother after the passing of his father in 2023.

Chief Insp Gyaba told the court that Agnes had been feeding the accused ever since his father passed away.

The court heard that on August 7, Agnes could not cook because she was unwell.

The prosecution said three days later, when the accused returned home at about 9 pm there was no food at home

Chief Insp Gyaba said when the accused inquired why his good was not served, Agnes told him she could not cook because she was not well.

The policeman said that the accused got infuriated and started hurling insults at his mother.

Chief Insp Gyaba said when Agnes tried to calm Afriyie down, the accused pushed her and she fell on the ground and passed out.

The court heard that the accused took to his heels after he realised the step-mother had passed out.

Chief Insp Gyaba said some neighbours took Agnes to the hospital and reported the case to the police.

The prosecution said the accused was later arrested and brought to court
