Man jailed 5 years for stealing company’s GH¢199,040

The Achimota Circuit Court has sentenced Collins Acquah, 26, a former Assistant Manager of the Accra Mall branch of Chicken Inn and Pizza Inn, to five years’ imprisonment in hard labour, for stealing GH¢199,040 belonging to the company.

The court ordered Acquah to refund the stolen money to the company, and imposed GH¢1,200 fine on him, to be paid to his former employers, or in default go to prison for two years.

The convict, who stole GH¢199,040 from his employers in December last year, was charged with stealing pursuant to Section 123(1) and 124(1) of the Criminal Offenses Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Acquah, who earlier pleaded not guilty, later changed his plea to guilty and was subsequently convicted on his plea of guilty by the court.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen Ahiale told the court presided over by Mrs Akosua Anokyewaa Adjapong, that Acquah gained access to the vault room, where proceeds from December 25 and 26, 2023, sales were kept, due to the Christmas holidays.

At about 4:23 am on December 27, 2023, the court heard that Acquah stole the cash totaling GH¢199,040.

The incident according to the prosecution was captured on CCTV footage and was reviewed later that day confirming the theft.

ASP Ahaile said after the incident, Acquah fled to Cape Coast, in the Central Region, and went into hiding and all efforts by the management of Chicken Inn and Pizza Inn, a fast food company, to contact him proved futile.

The prosecution said management of the company reported the case to the Airport Police Station, Accra.

Delivering judgment, Mrs Akosua Adjapong, said she took into consideration the age of Acquah, being a first time offender and voluntarily admitting guilt.
