\Ghana champions, Medeama SC, will be in a battle of their lives when they face continental giants, T.P Mazembe of DR Congo, at the preliminary stage of the CAF Champions League Competition, following yesterday’s draw.
Progression would be determine after a two-legged encounter that will see Medeama host the first leg at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa with Mazembe hosting the second leg clash in Kinshasa.
The draw, conducted at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) headquarters in Cairo, handed Medeama the tough opponents in the opening stage of the competition.
Should the Ghanaian champions progress, they will face either Tunisian heavyweights, Club Africain or Malian side, Djoliba AC, in the second preliminary round as they seek a place in the lucrative group stage of Africa’s premier club competition.
The first preliminary round is scheduled to take place between September 4-6 for the first legs, with the return fixtures to be played from September 11-13.
The second preliminary round will follow shortly afterwards, with the first-leg matches slated for September 14-16 and the return legs scheduled between September 23-25.
Meanwhile, Dreams FC have emerged as Ghana’s highest-ranked club in the latest Confederation of African Football (CAF) club rankings ahead of the 2026/27 season, while traditional giants, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, failed to make the continental list.
The Still Believe lads occupies the 32nd position on the CAF rankings, following their impressive performances in African inter-club competitions, particularly their memorable campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Dreams FC’s rise on the continental stage represents a major achievement for the club, which has quickly established itself as one of Ghana’s most competitive sides beyond the domestic league.
The club’s impressive showing has now placed them ahead of Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, who are notably absent from the latest CAF rankings.
Hearts and Asante Kotoko, two of Ghana’s most decorated clubs with rich histories in African football, have struggled in recent years to maintain consistent performances in CAF competitions. Their absence from the ranking list highlights the challenges facing the country’s biggest football brands on the continental stage.
Medeama SC are the other Ghanaian club featured in the rankings, occupying the 54th position. The Tarkwa-based side earned recognition through their participation in CAF competitions and continued representation of Ghana at the highest level.
Across Africa, South African champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, sit at the top of the rankings with 73 points, replacing Egyptian giants Al Ahly, who have dropped to second place with 66 points. Tunisia’s Esperance Sportive de Tunis, Morocco’s RS Berkane and Algeria’s USM Alger complete the top five.
