THE 150th Anniversary Planning Committee (APC) of Mfantsipim School has launched mobile money to raise fund towards the school’s sesquicentennial celebrations and legacy projects.
The committee announced that alumni, staff, students and well-wishers can contribute across all mobile networks, MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo, by simply dialling the shortcode, 9201876#, to support the sesquicentennial celebrations.
Speaking at a pre-launch press briefing in Accra, Chairman of the APC, Captain John Yamoah, called on old boys and friends of the institution to rally behind the anniversary activities.
“This sesquicentennial is more than a school anniversary; it is a national celebration of 150 years of secondary school education in Ghana. For over a century and a half, Mfantsipim has shaped generations of leaders, statesmen, professionals, academics and sportsmen who have served Ghana and the world with distinction,” he stated.
Proceeds from the shortcode, Captain Yamoah, said campaign would support a portfolio of transformative projects. That, he emphasised, included the upgrading of residential and academic facilities, expansion of STEM and digital learning infrastructure, improvement of sports facilities, establishment of a museum to preserve the school’s 150-year history, and the construction of a commemorative monument to mark the milestone.
Captain Yamoah said the year-long celebration is on the theme: ‘A Legacy of Excellence, Leadership and Service to Inspire the Future.’ He also mentioned that the activities for the celebration would run from February to November 2026, with the official launch slated for April 11, 2026, at the Accra International Conference Centre. Captain Yamoah note that the Vice-President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, was expected to attend as Special Guest.
He announced that the celebrations would climax with a two-week programme from November 4 to 15, culminating in a Grand Anniversary Durbar on November 14. Furthermore, Captain Yamoah said the event was expected to be graced by the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, Omanhene of the Oguaa Traditional Area.
“Other activities lined up include the unveiling of the anniversary cloth and songs, a lecture series, homecoming events, community outreach programmes, inter-schools sports competitions, and a Night of Awards to honour distinguished old boys, staff and key contributors to Ghana’s pre-tertiary education sector,” he outlined.
He appealed to well-wishers and stakeholders to encouraged and support the Mfantsipim@150 legacy projects by dialling 9201876# on any network and following the prompts.
The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, an old student, lauded the school’s trans-generational contribution to national development.
“Mfantsipim stands as a beacon of excellence and a model for secondary education in Ghana. Its values, achievements and enduring legacy provide a powerful lens through which we can assess the journey of secondary education in Ghana,” he noted.
