The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has appealed to residents of the Upper East Region to give peace a chance and forge ahead in unity for the educational development of the region.

He explained that peace was sine qua non to any form of development, of which education was no exception.

“Education can only flourish in an environment of peace and harmony,” the Minister stated.

The Minister made the appeal here on Monday when he paid a working visit to some centres within the conflict zone of the region where students were sitting for their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The visit, which took him to Zebila Senior High Technical School among others, was to afford him firsthand information on the progress of the examination as well as assess how students within these disturbed areas were coping with the exams scheduled to end on Friday.

He also appealed to parents, teachers, and policymakers to work together to ensure that every child feels safe, supported, and inspired to learn.

Mr Iddrisu specifically called for the maintenance of peace and harmony across the nation, with particular emphasis in the Bawku area.

He said education remained the most powerful tool to end poverty, create opportunities, and uplift communities, stressing however, that “Without peace, classrooms fall silent.”

The Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to protecting educational gains and advancing efforts toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4, which sought to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all.

He commended all candidates currently sitting for their examinations and encouraged them to approach the process with confidence, adding that “The nation is proud of you.”
