The Minister of Education, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, has emphasised that no educational reform could succeed without deliberate investment in the professional growth of teachers.

He said educators were central to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and driving national development, adding that the government remained committed to investing in teacher development.

Mr Iddrisu made the remarks in Accra yesterday when he opened a four-day Regional Competence Enhancement Workshop on Strengthening Teacher Professional Development and Learning in Africa, organised by the National Teaching Council (NTC) in collaboration with education stakeholders and partner agencies across the continent.

He described the workshop as timely, noting that the future of Africa’s education system depended on a well-trained, adaptable, and morally upright teaching force.

“The quality of the student and the output of a good learner is a function of a good teacher. We owe it to our teachers to support their continuous professional development,” he stated.

Highlighting global trends, the Minister identified Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the green economy as major factors shaping the future of education.

“If we don’t have teacher professional development, how are we going to cope with the challenges and opportunities of AI? It is changing the way we teach, learn, and practice,” he said.

He also called for the integration of environmental sustainability into teacher education to nurture moral responsibility toward protecting the environment.

Mr Iddrisu commended the NTC for its initiatives, including the Teacher Licensure and Registration System, the National Best Teacher Awards, and the Teaching Management Information System (TMIS), which tracks teacher performance and attendance.

The Registrar of the NTC, Dr Christian Addai-Poku, said the council’s initiatives were transforming the teaching profession, adding that more than 350,000 teachers in Ghana had been registered and licensed.

He reaffirmed the NTC’s commitment to ensuring that all teachers meet professional and ethical standards.
