ONE of the finest strikers in the Ghana Premier League (GPL), Kofi Kordzi, says his eyes are emblazoned on the goal-king fleece as the 2021-22 league enters into the second round tomorrow.
“My target is to win the goal-king title and I’m going to work very hard towards that goal during this second round.
“Of course, I know it’s a difficult task, but you know nothing good comes easy and I’m going to keep my nose to the grindstone to make the dream possible,” the strong and burly Hearts of Oak goal-poacher told the Times Sports yesterday.
The 26-year-old striker, who is endowed with some teasing physical strength and explosive left-footed corkers, has so far banged home seven goals in 14 games – but adrift Asante Kotoko’s Cameroonian import Frank Thierry Mbella, who presently leads the pack with 11 goals.
According to Kordzi, known in football circles as ‘Aveyime Drogba’ for his predatory instincts and goal-scoring dexterity, the goal-king race “is still very open and I’m going to give it a big shot with the tacit support of my teammates.”
Other players hunting for the season’s scorer’s crown are Aduana Stars’ Bright Adjei (9), RTU’s David Abagna (8) and Augustine Okrah of Bechem United (8). Four players: Karela United’s Umar Bashiru, Maxwell Abbey Quaye of Great Olympics, King Faisal’s Zubairu Ibrahim and Agyemin Boateng Mensah of Dreams FC are all tied at seven.
Three players – Dreams FC’s duo of FatawuIssahaku and Hazaf Ali as well as Yaw Annor of AshantiGold have six goals.
Defending champions Hearts take on Legon Cities at the El-Wak Sports Stadium on Saturday, and Kordzi hopes to get on the scorer’s sheet when the opportunity avails itself.
“I didn’t have a great first round, but I’m determined to make amends when the league resumes this weekend.
“Importantly, I have picked a few lessons from the first round which I hope to unleash during the second stanza,” he assured.
Kordzi was signed by Hearts from lower tier side Royals FC in 2019 and became a big hit, scoring six times as the club’s top scorer in the truncated 2019/2020 season.
