NAIMOS Military Officer Killed in Fatal Obuasi Accident

A military officer with the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has tragically lost his life in an accident while returning from an anti-galamsey operation in Obuasi. The officer, popularly known as “One Man Thousand,” was travelling with colleagues in a Toyota Hilux (registration number AA 7182-25) late on Wednesday when the vehicle somersaulted along the stretch between Anyankyerim and the Airport Road.

Four other officers sustained severe injuries and are in critical condition. They were initially treated at the AJ Health Foundation before being referred to the Anglogold Obuasi Hospital, where they remain under close medical supervision.

The accident occurred after the team had conducted an operation at a concession at Anyankyerim, reportedly owned by Mining and Construction Services Limited. The site has been embroiled in controversy, with illegal miners claiming it was allocated to them by the government. Investigations suggest that some of these miners may have backing from influential political figures.

Reports also indicate that illicit mining gangs from Amansie and surrounding areas had taken control of the concession, preventing the rightful owners from accessing it.

Prior to the accident, NAIMOS teams had also raided illegal mining sites near the Obuasi Airport enclave. During the operation, motorcycles, cars, and water pumps were seized, while makeshift structures and mining equipment were demolished to deter further illegal activities.

One suspected organiser of the Obuasi galamsey network was arrested and is currently assisting police with investigations. Several others fled upon the arrival of the Taskforce.
